Free turtles | Osimhen and Fast

The marine park of the Sorrento Peninsula, once again takes the lead in the battle to protect marine flora and fauna.

Osimhen and Fast are the names of the two caretta caretta turtles, released these days from the beach of Vico Equense, a small town on the Sorrento coast.

The story of the two turtles is fundamentally different but united by a single denominator, the help they received from the Turtel point in Portici, which first cared for them and then, in collaboration with the staff of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area and the municipality of Vico Equense, released them back into the wild.

Osimhen, is a large adult male turtle that weighs 85Kg and is about 80 cm long, a record size for our seas; he ended up by mistake in the net of some fishermen from Maiori, a small town on the Amalfi coast, and they quickly contacted Area Marina Protetta, which took action to rescue the animal.

Fast is a small turtle of just 25 kg found adrift in the Aeolian Islands, and after an initial hospitalization in the Portici center and subsequent care, she was able to return to her natural habitat.

The period chosen for their release into the sea, was not accidental, but rather planned by virtue of the fact that with the approach of spring begins the mating season of the turtles, in addition, considering the size of Osimhen, it was decided to equip him with a satellite transmitter, which will allow us to follow him and understand whether he will remain in the area or will decide to move to other seas.

My Sorrento Holiday, in love with our sea and its beautiful inhabitants, can do nothing but thank the people who participated in the recovery, rescue and release back into the wild of the two magnificent specimens of Caretta Caretta, and We would like to ask all colleagues of the boat tour charter to immediately alert the competent authorities, in case of sightings of animals in distress.
